We often focus on what is on our plates. As we look at ways to become healthier, often we start to incorporate more fruit and vegetables into our diet.
This a wonderful step towards a healthier you. However, we can go even further to really making sure we are getting the best produce on our plate. And that comes down to where we buy from, and when we buy it. Have you for instance, noticed that if you buy strawberries in June they can taste sweeter and juicier? What about comparing the strawberries you have bought from your local supermarket, to when you have picked your own?
Eating fruit and vegetables picked straight from the source is the best way to ensure you are getting all the goodness it has to offer, and if you have ever picked your own fruit and vegetables you will know that you can taste the difference.
Picking, and growing your own are not always viable options. So what can we do?
- Eat in-season produce
- Eat locally grown produce when you can – take a look to see if there is a local farmers market in your area
- Buy whole fruit and vegetables – not pre-prepared
Making these additional changes can help to make sure you are packing your plate with as many vitamins and minerals as possible, which helps towards a healthy, balanced diet.
